We have watched and read with horror, every day, as details unfold of long-planned crimes against humanity so grotesque, they stretch the bounds of decency and comprehension. What the Israeli people have suffered—most of them civilians—is unprcedented in scope and cruelty. Every day the numbers rise: 1,300 murdered, over 3,300 injured and 150 adults and children abducted and taken to Gaza.
Our hearts cry for an end to the suffering for both the Israeli and Palestinian people. Tragically, what Hamas has wrought is so unspeakable, so inhumane, that the trauma will remain for generations to come; and we are grateful for any words of comfort, heartfelt solidarity and righteous action.
On October 10, 2023, in an address from the White House, President Biden delivered on all counts:
- “So, in this moment, we must be crystal clear: We stand with Israel. We stand with Israel. And we will make sure Israel has what it needs to take care of its citizens, defend itself, and respond to this attack.”
- “Let’s be real clear: There is no place for hate in America — not against Jews, not against Muslims, not against anybody. We reject — we reject — what we reject is terrorism. We condemn the indiscriminate evil, just as we’ve always done. That’s what America stands for.”
- “We’re — we’re with Israel. Let’s make no mistake.”
